The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI), a faith-based coalition of 34,000 churches comprised of 15 denominations and 15.7 million African Americans, activates 300 churches in and around the Orlando area to assist the LGBT+ community and law enforcement around the issue of grief-counseling and funeral arrangements for their loved ones. In addition, we have authorized an additional 250 African American ministers to reach out to residents of Orlando, providing whatever spiritual support they need during this time of unspeakable peril.

The authorization of these churches means simply that minsters will begin to prepare and train their evangelistic team to reach out to the LGBT community and to find out what they can do to assist in terms of counseling, funeral arrangements or other needs. There will be special donations collected to contribute to the expenses of these activities moving forward over the next several months. These are the same actions that NBCI churches performed during Katrina and 9/11.

Rev. Anthony Evans, President of the National Black Church Initiative, “Everyone is aware of the historic theological differences that we have with our gay brothers and sisters. But those differences pale in light of the present tragedy that is unfolding. This is why we have taken the unusual step to activate over 300 churches in the Orlando area to assist our LGBT+ communities and others during this emotional time. We look forward to doing our part to bring about some sort of healing through the entire community here in Orlando and across the country.”
