What Is Going On? After Only 5 Months On the Job, Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church Pastor, Rev. Dr. Betty Deas Clark, Gets Reassigned to Another Church

Media outlets report the pastor at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston is being reassigned to Georgetown.

The Rev. Dr. Betty Deas Clark was appointed in January as the permanent pastor of Emanuel, where nine people were killed during a Bible study last year.

Media outlets quote sources as saying that Bishop Richard Franklin Norris of the 7th District of the AME Church reassigned Clark on Tuesday to Bethel AME Church in Georgetown. A spokeswoman at the district office in Columbia said Wednesday that no statements are being issued.

The reasons for the transfer, in the midst of 12 days of events marking the anniversary of the church shootings, were not immediately clear.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Clark would not talk about the matter late Tuesday.
